If you want to try pet spot removal yourself, here are the steps. But first…

Please DO NOT do this!

Before going into what you can do for pet spot removal, here is what we do not want you to do because doing so may ruin your carpet, upholstery, rugs, and sanity!

Do Not:

  1. Throw the kitchen sink at it – meaning don’t just reach for any bottle of “magic” cleaning product that you get your hands on. Most don’t work, and many can bleach or cause damage to the fibers that you’re treating.
  2. Rub or scrub carpet, upholstery, or rugs – ever. There is nothing worse than successfully removing a pet spot only to realize you’ve permanently damaged the fibers.
  3. Leave it and/or forget about it. Urine damage, especially, grows stronger over time. If you choose to wait until your next cleaning that may be weeks or months later, you risk permanent damage and more costly restoration attempts. Dealing with pet spots immediately significantly increases the success rate. A few days is usually fine. More than a couple of weeks starts to tread on the line of irreversible damage.

Go ahead and DO this:

Alright, with those caveats out of the way, here is what you should do immediately.

Do:

  1. ALWAYS TEST FOR COLOR FASTNESS BEFORE ATTEMPTING PET SPOT REMOVAL. It is beyond the scope of the page to describe the steps for every type of fabric and fiber, so call us at 810-225-2184 and we’ll be glad to help you with a color fastness test.
  2. Use a spoon or paper cup and scoop up and discard feces and vomit
  3. Blot (never rub or scrub) up the pet spot with a dry, white terry cloth towel or paper towels. Use white towels so there is no chance of color transfer from the towel to the fiber or fabric.
  4. Dampen a white terry cloth or microfiber towel with our Rendall’s Certified Carpet Spot Remover and blot the spot. If the pet spot is on synthetic carpeting you may get better results by spraying the product directly on the spot. Repeat until there is no more transfer from the spot to the towel. If you don’t have our Rendall’s Certified Spot Remover, mix 1 tsp Dawn dish detergent with 32 oz of tap water and apply in the same way as described above.
NOTE: The Dawn/water spotter method mentioned above only lubricates the soil for easier removal and doesn’t counteract biological contaminants, dye discoloration, or odors. However if the pet spot is very fresh, doesn’t have a malodor, and has not discolored the fibers, it may be all that is necessary. For better results, it’s best to use our Rendall’s Certified Spot Remover.

If the pet spot is not removed at this point, we definitely need to hear from you! Here’s how we do it:

Pet Spot Removal from carpet by the Cleaning Craftsmen at Rendall’s is a 1, 2, 3 process:

1. Identify

Pet spot removal, especially odors, can be frustrating to fix because the pet spots are not always visible to the naked eye. Identification is imperative to complete pet spot and odor removal, and it’s impossible to do an in-depth inspection without the proper tools.

To help us hunt down hidden pet spots , we use our exclusive PUP (Pet Urine Plan) kit. Our PUP kit contains several professional testing tools, including an industrial UV light specially tuned into the proper wavelength that will fluoresce when the beam comes into contact with active urine and biological contaminants. Once we’ve identified the severity, our next step is to consult our findings with you and develop a plan of action.

2. Consultation

There are several different ways in which to remove pet spots, ranging from surface spot treatment to full-blown decontamination, or even pad and carpet replacement. Which treatment will be the most effective is communicated with you at the Consultation phase. We will consult with you to come to the best possible solution to your pet spot removal issues.

Pet spot removal may entail merely a topical decontamination, or based on level of contamination, pad decontamination or pad replacement, and subfloor decontamination and sealing may be required. Some pet stains permanently damage carpet dyes. However, pet stains will usually look much better after our treatments are complete. During our consultation we’ll let you know the severity and steps needed for restoration. Lastly, during our Consultation, we derive the price which is based on the scope of work necessary for us to remove the pet spots and odors.

3. Remove the Pet Spots

After we’ve determined severity and have your authorization to proceed, we use our specialized knowledge, training, expertise, tools, and equipment to treat and remove your pet spots and odors!
